The refillable ink tanks, neatly placed at the front right of the printer, aren’t just a decorative addition: Epson says that by using tanks instead of notoriously expensive cartridges, users can save up to 90 per cent on ink costs, and the tanks can hold the equivalent of 72 cartridges’ worth of ink. Filling the tanks is quick and oddly satisfying: the resealable and drip-free ink bottles that come with the printer come with heads that can only be used with the appropriate colour tank which means there’s no stomach ache as you realize that you’ll be forced to endure a yellow-tinged cyan for the rest of the printer’s lifetime.
By flipping the bottle upside down joins perfectly to the tank and stops automatically when the tank is filled and there is no requirement to squeeze. The tank’s transparent front is an indicator of the level of ink and can also be used to color the black-coloured printer. There’s enough ink to print up to 4,500 mono pages as well as 7,500 colour pages when the ink is dry.
