We tested five label makers with a variety of price points

We tested five label makers with a variety of price points and functionality. The P-Touch Cube from Brother Smartphone label maker ($40) and the abrasively named DYMO the 450 Turbo label printer ($73) provide a variety of digital features. They can connect through Bluetooth to your smartphone (Brother), or by the USB cable to your PC. This lets you design custom templates and images, if that’s what you’re looking for. The DYMO Labelwriter Thermal Prints postage and produces up to 71 labels in a minute. None of which, of course, I anticipate ever needing to do.

In order to use the sleekly designed Brother P-Touch Cube, you need to download the special P-Touch app, which right there is a deal-breaker for me, what with my can-I-just-pick-it-up-and-use-it rule. This model is ideal who like the idea of creating labels right from your phone.

The model we tried was the DYMO LetraTag ($18) It came with an alphabetical keyboard with a loud and slow-running printer, and low-quality labels with backings made of paper which were difficult to peel off.
